Moldova in solidarity with UK: Chisinau supports sanctions against Russia for 2018 Novichok attack
Moldova welcomes the United Kingdom's decision to impose sanctions against Russia's military intelligence service (GRU), following the Novichok nerve agent attack in Salisbury in 2018, which led to the death of British citizen Dawn Sturgess. The British authorities have completed the official investigation and have formally attributed responsibility to Russia for the incident.
In a message published on Platform X, Moldova’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs of (MAE) expressed its solidarity with the United Kingdom in efforts to counteract hybrid attacks and hostile actions by Russia.
“MAE welcomes the United Kingdom's decision to impose sanctions on the Russian GRU for the Novichok nerve agent attack in Salisbury in 2018, which resulted in the death of Dawn Sturgess. We stand in solidarity with the United Kingdom in countering Russia's hybrid aggression and defending international law,” reads a press release of the ministry.
The new sanctions package introduced by London targets both GRU agents directly involved in the Salisbury operation, as well as individuals responsible for cyberattacks, informational interference and acts of sabotage.
The internationally known case refers to the poisoning of former double agent Sergei Skripal and his daughter, Yulia, an incident in which two British citizens were collateral victims, and Dawn Sturgess lost her life. British authorities consider the attack one of the most severe clandestine operations attributed to Russia on UK soil.
