Moldova to have additional tools to combat cybercrime
Moldova will have additional tools in the process of combating cybercrime. The government today approved a draft decision on the ratification of the Second Additional Protocol to the Council of Europe Convention on Cybercrime, signed in Strasbourg on May 12, 2022.
Interior Minister Daniella Misail-Nichitin emphasized that the draft was particularly relevant, in the context in which more and more offences are committed online, including computer fraud, cyberattacks and data theft.
“It is important for the authorities to have modern and high‑performance tools for the quick collection of electronic evidence, including when such evidence is located abroad. The Protocol aims to modernize international cooperation in the field of cybercrime, providing faster access to electronic evidence through better mechanisms for information exchange, direct communication with service providers and the operationalization of 24/7 contact points,” said Daniella Misail-Nichitin.
The document also helps reduce the time needed to get electronic evidence, which is important for conducting criminal investigations and preventing the loss of relevant data. At the same time, it sets out clear safeguards for the protection of personal data and the observance of fundamental rights, ensuring a balance between the conduct of investigations and the protection of citizens’ rights.
The implementation of the document will contribute to enhancing the level of cybersecurity, better combating digital crime and strengthening the institutional capacity of Moldova in this field, including in the context of its European integration path.
