Moldovan Crisis Management Center announces measures to manage pollution of Dniester River: citizens advised not to use river water until quality is confirmed

The National Crisis Management Center (CNMC) has adopted a string of preventive measures to protect public health and the ecosystem, in the context of the pollution of the Dniester River with oil-based products. Authorities are urging citizens to avoid using river water for drinking, cooking or other household activities until its quality is officially confirmed.

According to the CNMC, starting today, the water intake station at Cosauti, which supplies the Soroca–Balti aqueduct, has been temporarily shut down. Water supply has been suspended in the locality of Naslavcea and in the districts of Soroca, Balti, Floresti and Sangerei, until the quality of the water is confirmed.

Sport and recreational fishing is temporarily prohibited on the Naslavcea – Dubasari reservoir section until April 1, 2026.

Local authorities and water operators have been instructed to check water reserves, identify alternative sources and ensure priority supply for hospitals, schools and social services.

Citizens are urged to use only drinking water from safe sources, including bottled water, and to avoid using water from the Dniester for drinking, cooking or other household activities until its quality is officially confirmed.

The actions of the competent institutions are coordinated sectorally by the Environment Ministry and the population will be periodically informed about the development of the situation.
