Moldovan police take drugs worth over 20 million lei out of circulation

Drugs worth over 20 million lei were removed from circulation last week. Police subdivisions conducted extensive nationwide operations aimed at combating the illegal circulation of narcotic substances.

According to the General Police Inspectorate (IGP), law-enforcers carried out nine searches as part of 78 contraventional cases. At the same time, 15 criminal cases were initiated, leading to 17 searches at homes, in transport and on individuals.

During the operations, hashish, PVP, cocaine, mephedrone, MDMA, and marijuana were seized. The total value of the drugs taken out of circulation amounts to 20.2 million lei.

Since the beginning of this year, over 900 criminal files related to drug trafficking have been registered in Moldova. In the context, the Interior Ministry, along with the IGP, has proposed a legislative draft to tighten penalties for these types of crimes.

Thus, the changes proposed by the authorities bring harsher penalties for aggravated forms of offenses, expand the list of prohibited substances and clarify the regime of precursors, ethnobotanicals and new substances appearing on the market. The legal framework will also provide for more severe sanctions for drug and arms smuggling, including serious cases or within crime rings, in order to discourage these acts and protect citizens' safety.
