National Hotel, other abandoned buildings might be mandatorily secured; Moldovan parliament analyzes new rules for neglected buildings

The situation of abandoned buildings that pose a risk to the population, including the case of the National Hotel, today was discussed at a closed-door hearing of the commission for national security in parliament.

After the hearings, MP Lilian Carp said that properties in a state of degradation represented a real danger to citizens’ safety and can become hotspots for illegal activities. Therefore, a legislative draft proposes obliging owners to secure these buildings through fencing and monitoring.

“If the owners refuse to fence the area or place warning signs regarding the risks, the measures will be undertaken by local public authorities, and the expenses will be recovered later from the economic agent,” Carp said. He noted that such practices were already applied in more countries.

Thus, abandoned buildings could be covered with boards displaying the future project, in order to prevent a degraded urban image and unauthorized access.

As for the National Hotel, Lilian Carp emphasized that it had become a “symbol of corruption” and called for intensified police controls, in order to prevent new tragic incidents after a minor has recently lost his life inside the building.

During the closed session, the case of the truck full of weapons discovered at the Moldovan-Romanian border was also discussed, along with the alarming increase in drug trafficking on the territory of Moldova.
