PHOTO // Searches at Leuseni, Cahul customs posts of Moldova; Seven Customs Service employees detained in systemic corruption case

Seven officials from the Leuseni–Albita and Cahul–Oancea customs posts   today were detained for 72 hours in a corruption case. They are suspected of having systematically demanded various sums of money from transport operators.

According to the National Anticorruption Center (CNA), the suspects, while performing their official duties, allegedly abused their positions and, acting out of material interest, demanded and received sums of up to 1,000 euros from passenger and parcel transport operators, in order not to subject vehicles to customs control and to allow goods to be brought into the territory of Moldova without being cleared through customs.

During the criminal investigation, several instances of demanding and receiving money were documented, with the funds being transferred under the control of the criminal investigation body. Following the searches carried out, the seven individuals are to be questioned and placed in detention.

Criminal investigation actions are ongoing, in order to establish all the circumstances of the case, identify other persons involved and consolidate the body of evidence.
