Prime Minister bids farewell to Ilie Ilașcu

Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu bid farewell to Ilie Ilașcu, who is being laid to rest today. The official emphasized that Ilie Ilașcu was "the man who defended our national identity and the sacred right to be free."

The Prime Minister highlighted Ilie Ilașcu's role in the fight for democratic values and urged citizens to honor his memory.

"We bid farewell to our hero – Ilie Ilașcu, the man who dedicated his life to the independence and territorial integrity of the Republic of Moldova. With head held high, even when he was threatened and tortured, Ilie Ilașcu defended our national identity and the sacred right to be free with dignity. It is important to honor his memory, to learn from the sacrifice he made, and to pass on this lesson of courage in the fight for freedom and independence to future generations. May God rest him in peace," stated Alexandru Munteanu.

Ilie Ilașcu, an emblematic figure of the National Liberation Movement will be laid to rest on 20 November. Ilașcu will be buried in Bellu Cemetery in Bucharest. In the Republic of Moldova, November 20th is declared a national day of mourning. The State Flag will be at half-mast throughout the entire country, as well as at the diplomatic and consular missions of the Republic of Moldova abroad.

Ilie Ilașcu passed away on November 17, 2025. His destiny became a symbol of resistance against abuses and one of the most well-known human rights violation cases in the region. Ilie Ilașcu remains in collective memory as one of the bravest fighters for freedom and national identity, and his legacy continues to be a beacon for all who believe in democratic values and a nation's right to determine destiny.
