Problems in Moldova's national power system: PM calls for solidarity, says institutions working for quick settlement of problem

Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu has addressed a message to citizens following the major disruptions recorded this morning in the power system of Moldova, caused by serious failures in Ukraine’s electricity grid, which led to a voltage drop on the 400 kV Isaccea–Vulcanesti–MGRES (Kuchurgan power station) line and to the emergency disconnection of the national system.

The PM urged the population to stay calm and show solidarity, noting that it is natural for people to be worried when they are affected by the lack of electricity, heating and communications.

“I know that many were worried and it is natural to feel this way, when we lack the most essential things – light, heat, limited communication. I urge you to stay united, to take care of the most vulnerable and to trust that the institutions are working to resolve the problem quickly,” the prime minister said.

The PM assured that Moldelectrica teams were intervening continuously to remedy the situation, and in more localities the power supply has already been restored. Work is continuing until a full return to normal operating parameters.

“In more settlements, the power supply has already been restored and work is continuing until a complete return to normal parameters. All medical and sanitary institutions are operating safely – hospitals are connected to electric generators,” the prime minister specified.

Alexandru Munteanu thanked the specialists who are working around the clock to restore the power system and offered recommendations for citizens:

“Dear citizens, let us now recall the most important recommendations in such situations: let us get informed from official sources; the institutions will continue to provide information updates.

- Let us act with responsibility and calm.

- Let us save our phone battery and use the phone for emergencies.

- Let us move around carefully – some traffic lights are not working, and roads are being used in winter conditions.

- Let us take care of and check on how the most vulnerable are feeling,” the prime minister recommended.

Energy Minister Dorin Junghietu informed that Moldova was facing a delicate situation in the national power system as a result of failures in Ukraine’s electricity grid. The official gave assurances that interventions were taking place on an emergency basis and that the authorities’ priority was to restore power supply to all affected consumers as quickly and safely as possible.

Today morning, at 10:42, disruptions were recorded in the power system of Moldova, after the voltage dropped on the 400 kV high-voltage Isaccea–Vulcanesti–MGRES line.
