Road workers of Moldova to carry out extensive repair works on national routes as soon as weather conditions allow
The National Roads Administration (AND) today announced that road maintenance teams would carry out more extensive repair works on routes across the country, as soon as weather conditions allow the use of hot asphalt mixtures.
At the same time, AND gave assurances that it constantly monitored the condition of the national road network and intervened promptly with cold asphalt mixture patching, in order to quickly repair the damage that appeared on the roads in recent periods. Interventions are prioritized according to the level of risk. It is about temporary and necessary measures to maintain traffic safety.
AND also explained the causes of the deterioration of the carriageway, manifested by potholes, cracks and local settlements.
According to AND, the main causes are the aging of the asphalt pavement and the infiltration of water into the road structure. During freezing periods, the accumulated water increases in volume, exerting pressure on the asphalt layer. Subsequently, during thawing, the structure gives way, especially on sections with worn asphalt pavement, and under traffic, particularly heavy traffic, potholes and pavement damage appear.
This phenomenon is exacerbated by the severe weather conditions recorded this year, characterized by repeated freeze-thaw cycles, heavy rainfall and significant temperature variations.
