Moldova to host European Weightlifting Championship for the first time
The Chisinau city will host the European Weightlifting Championship for seniors for the first time, due to take place at Arena Chisinau on April 13-21. The event will bring together approximately 300 sportspeople from 40 countries in the capital of Moldova. The organization of the competition was discussed by Minister of Education and Research Dan Perciun and President of the European Weightlifting Federation, Antonio Conflitti.
The 2025 European Weightlifting Championship for seniors is regarded as one of the most prestigious European sporting events of the year and will put Moldova on the map of major international competitions.
Minister Dan Perciun emphasized the tradition of weightlifting in Moldova and the importance of the European competition for local sportspeople. He noted that the event would inspire young people and position the country on the international sports map.
“Weightlifting has a strong tradition in Moldova and this event will be an exceptional opportunity for our sportspeople to compete at home, in front of our audience. The presence of the best European weightlifters will inspire athletes and stimulate interest in this sport. Organizing a European competition of such magnitude will position Moldova on the map of major sporting events and will show that we have the ability to host competitions at the highest level. Exceptional sportspeople, like Tudor Casapu, Marin Robu, and Elena Cîlcic, have achieved notable results for Moldova. This championship is a natural step in promoting a discipline that has brought numerous successes to our country,” said Minister Dan Perciun.
The event will bring together in Chisinau the best sportspeople from Europe and weightlifting enthusiasts, said President of the European Weightlifting Federation Antonio Conflitti.
“This is a major event. We will be able to see here in Chisinau not only the best sportspeople from Europe, but also all lovers of this sport. You will have chance to see the best and most talented sportspeople. This will be a gain of image not only for the Weightlifting Federation, but also for the entire country.”
As much as 6.5 million lei will be allocated from the state budget to organize this competition in Chisinau. Other expenses will be covered by the Federation and sponsors.
