A former political prisoner of the separatist regime in Tiraspol, arrested in 1992 along with members of 'Ilașcu group', Ilie Ilașcu was sentenced to death following a trial considered illegal by international organizations. For almost nine years, Ilie Ilașcu was held in detention, becoming a symbol of resistance against the Transnistrian regime and the fight for national freedom.

After his release in 2001, the Ilașcu case formed the basis of a European Court of Human Rights ruling that acknowledged the violation of his fundamental rights. He was decorated both in Romania and the Republic of Moldova for his courage and contribution to defending national values.

Ilie Ilașcu was elected as a member of the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova and later as a senator in the Romanian Parliament. Active in the National Liberation Movement of the 1990s, he supported Romanian identity and Moldova's alignment with the European democratic space.

Ilie Ilașcu passed away on November 17, 2025, remaining one of the emblematic figures of the National Liberation Resistance.
