Moldovans have bid farewell to Ilie Ilașcu, a former political prisoner and a symbol of the fight for freedom and Romanian identity. The emotionally charged event brought together friends, colleagues, and officials at the National Palace to pay their last respects. The photographs were taken by MOLDPRES photojournalist Mihai Vengher.
Arrested in 1992, Ilie Ilașcu was sentenced to death by an unconstitutional court, and following international community intervention, he was released on May 5, 2001, and handed over to the authorities in the Republic of Moldova and Romania. Ilie Ilașcu served as a member of the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova and as a senator in the Parliament of Romania. He passed away on November 17, 2025.
