Chisinau, 16 September /MOLDPRES/- Environment Ministers from Moldova and Lithuania, Valeriu Munteanu and Kęstutis Trečiokas, respectively, signed an intergovernmental treaty on environmental cooperation on 15 September.

The agreement provides for exchange of experience between the two states in the environmental protection sector and creating an adequate legal framework for bilateral collaboration. The document will contribute to strengthening the Moldovan-Lithuanian relations in protection and conservation of biological diversity, waste and dangerous substances management, elaboration of policies for a better management of water and air resources, etc.

The main areas of cooperation with Lithuania are related to taking over experience in adjusting the national legislation to the EU one, as well as to mobilising the technical and financial assistance to implement the national policies in the environmental sector.

At the same time, “the signing of this agreement will facilitate possibility to access the financial support for implementing the provisions of the Chapter 16 “Environment” and Chapter 17 “Climate Changes” of the Association Agreement with the EU, and namely, in terms of approximation of the environmental legislation,” a communiqué by the Environment Ministry reads.
