Moldova marks Day of Sovereignty today

Chisinau, 23 June /MOLDPRES/- Moldova marks Day of Sovereignty today. The Declaration of Sovereignty was adopted 27 years ago, on 23 June 1990, by MPs of the Supreme Soviet of the Moldovan Soviet Socialist Republic.
According to historians, the Declaration was adopted in a complex historical context, marked by a parade of sovereignty, a process that covered the entire Soviet space. Estonia first declared its sovereignty in November 1988, followed by Lithuania in April 1989 and Latvia in July 1989. Meanwhile, Lithuania declared its independence on 11 March 1990. Declaration of Sovereignty of the Moldovan Soviet Socialist Republic was also preceded by the one of Georgia on 26 May 1990 and of Russia on 12 June 1990.
The adoption of the declaration was the first major victory of the democratic forces in the struggle for revival and national liberation. Thus, it clearly stipulates that Moldova’s sovereignty is the only and necessary condition of Moldova’s statehood.
At the same time, the document sees the unitary and indivisible character of the state. It is set that Moldova respects the status of UN and expresses its adherence to the principles of this organization, declares itself to be a demilitarized area, actively promotes the consolidation of peace and security, is directly involved in the cooperation and security process, as well as in European structures.
The Declaration of Sovereignty was voted with one abstention.
On 23 June 1991, on the day of the first anniversary of the proclamation of Moldova’s sovereignty, the first series of stamps bearing the attributes of statehood – emblem and flag, were put into circulation in Chisinau.
On 23 June 2011, the series of postage stamps “20 years since first postage stamps of Moldova” were put into circulation.
