Moldovan speaker attends international conference

Chisinau, 30 October /MOLDPRES/- Development of local media and production is a priority for the Moldovan parliament, which is why we will support the solutions presented by experts for the improvement of the legislation.

Parliament Speaker Andrian Candu made the statement at an international conference “How to attract foreign investments in the Moldovan media through modern legislation”, the parliament’s public relations department has reported.

Attending the event are Candu, MPs, US Ambassador to Moldova James Pettit, members of the Audiovisual Coordination Council, representatives of media institutions, media organizations and development partners.

According to Candu, the authorities are aware of the importance of media development to advance the country through democratic reforms. “We set up in June a working group to improve media legislation, with the support of the Joint project of European Union and Council of Europe “Promoting freedom and pluralism of media in Moldova”. Together with experts and media representatives, we have agreed on very ambitious media projects with clear objectives, such as the new Audiovisual Code, new media law, clear regulation of access to information versus data protection and many other draft laws requiring adjustment to new realities”, the speaker said.

MPs Vladimir Hotineanu, chairman of the commission on culture, education, research, youth, sport and media, and George Mocanu, member of the commission on economy, budget and finance approached the legislative solutions to foreign investments in Moldovan media, the competitive advantages of our country on television and film production market, solutions to modernize the legislative, fiscal and budgetary framework of Moldova in order to draw foreign investments in TV and film production.

Experts from the Czech Republic, Finland, Georgia, Germany, Lithuania, Romania and Ukraine share the experience and best practices in the field. Finally, a report will be drafted with recommendations for modernization of Moldovan media legislation.

The conference is organized in the context of the work carried out by the working group to improve the media legislation. The event is organized by the Association for Development and Cooperation of Moldova, with the support of the Moldovan parliament, the US Embassy in Moldova, USAID, Freedom House, Internews Moldova, EU and Council of Europe project “Promoting freedom and pluralism of media in Moldova”.
