Chisinau, 27 November /MOLDPRES/ - The Expert-Grup analytical centre launched an interactive map on mineral resources of Moldova and their geographical position in Chisinau today.

A representative of Expert-Grup, Iurie Morcotilo, told a today’s news conference that the map was a first ever issue for Moldova, as integrated data on all quarries and mine extractions from Moldova have not been displayed in public space so far.

„On this map, we placed all current quarries and deposits of mineral resources from Moldova, with detailed features dealing with the owner of these quarries, their geographical position and what mineral resources are extracted from the concerned place. The map was created in order to improve the transparency of the use of mineral resources, as so far, no data on the extraction or geographical position of all these quarries and their managers have been present in the public space. The concerned information is either absent or is dispersed at various public authorities,” Iurie Morcotilo noted.

Besides, through the new application, citizens will be able to signal certain problems dealing with the illegal exploitation of mineral resources. Iurie Morcotilo specified that, according to estimations, in 2017, the number of unauthorized  quarries exceeded 230 units and the sum of the damages caused by the illicit extraction of natural resources amounted to more than 200 million lei in 2010-2017.

The map mine extractions from Moldova was worked out within a project titled, Use of natural resources: improvement of record and transparency, implemented by the Expert-Grup Independent Analytical Centre, with the financial support of the Soros-Moldova Foundation.
