Moldova's National Statistics Bureau receives digital equipment for conducting Population and Housing Census

Chisinau, 6 February /MOLDPRES/ - The National Statistics Bureau (BNS) has received a consignment of digital equipment, which includes 3,000 tablets and accessories due to be used at the conducting of the Population and Housing Census (PHC) in 2024.   

BNS director general Oleg Cara said that the census from 2024 would include a string of new elements, carried out for the first time ever. ‘’We mean the fact that the way of collecting the information will be based on electronic devices; the questionnaires will be filled in electronically. Thus, the quickness in the collection of data, their high quality and the security of the information got will be ensured,’’ Oleg Cara noted.  

European Union’s Ambassador to Moldova Jānis Mažeiks explained the benefits in the carrying out of the census. ‘’The tablets will fulfill a crucial role in the digitalization of BNS. This equipment will allow modernizing the processes of collection and analysis of data; will enhance the efficiency, safety and comfort of the census process. The use of the tablets will contribute to the enhancement of the level of people’s confidence in the statistics system; will ensure the confidentiality and the accuracy of the data’s collection. The citizens will be more confident that the data of the census is accurate and that it will be used responsibly and transparently,’’ the Ambassador said.   

The deputy representative of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in Moldova, Natalia Plugaru, said that the use of the digital technologies meant a more efficient and quicker process of collection of data and the information gained will be more qualitative.  

The Population and Housing Census will be held during 8 April – 7 July 2024 and will be the most complex national statistics exercise. BNS benefits from assistance for the preparation and conducting of PHC 2024 within the project, Support for the National Statistics Bureau in the Conducting of the Population and Housing Census in 2024. The project is financed by the European Union and co-financed by UNFPA.
