Moldovan PM meets UNFPA Representatives

Chisinau, March 25. /MOLDPRES/- Demographic situation in Moldova, as well as developments in the country's European path were discussed by Prime Minister Dorin Recean and Florence Bauer, UNFPA's Regional Director for Eastern Europe and Central Asia. The meeting was also attended by Karina Nersesyan, new Resident Representative in Moldova, who started her mission in Chisinau on 1 March 2024.

Recean appreciated the support provided by UNFPA in the most difficult periods, the prompt response to the refugee crisis and involvement in building a more resilient and prosperous state. According to the prime minister, the main directions of cooperation in the next period will be aimed at developing policies in the labor market, implementing programs for young people and the elderly, as well as ensuring an efficient governance based on data.

Florence Bauer said that the Republic of Moldova is a leader in the region in terms of demographic policies based on evidence, which target the real needs of the people, emphasizing the openness of UNFPA to continue providing the necessary support for reforms in education, health and social protection. Also, the official congratulated the Republic of Moldova for the significant progress made in recent years, which brought our country closer to the European Union.

The sides also approached the importance of modernizing the infrastructure for the collection and production of quality statistical data and referred to the conduct of the Population and Housing Census, which starts on 8 April 2024.

UNFPA is the lead UN agency on population reproductive health, youth and women's empowerment, combating violence and producing quality statistical data for development. It operates on the basis of the Country Program signed with the Government of the Republic of Moldova for 2023-2027.
