Chisinau, May 8 /MOLDPRES/ - Ion Mereacre is one of the 500 people from the village of Costești, Ialoveni district, who were conscripted in World War II. Only 170 of them have returned home, the presidential press service has reported.

"Today I had an emotional discussion with Mr. Mereacre, who at just 18 years old in 1944 was sent to the warfront. His hope is that his 4 children, 10 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren, but also the whole of Moldova will never again know the horrors of war and enjoy life in peace. I thanked Ion Mereacre for his sacrifice, for his love of his country and for having contributed, together with countless heroes, to bringing peace to the European continent", President Maia Sandu said.

On 8 May 1945, victory over Nazism was announced and a bloody war came to an end. Very few people are left alive to tell the story of the tragedy of war. "Mr Mereacre is one of them. Today there are 37 living World War II veterans in Moldova. In honour of them and the fallen, we will do everything in our power to ensure that there is good understanding in our country and that people live in peace," the head of state said.
