EU to increase allocations for Eastern Neighborhood, including Moldova, by 25 million euros in 2026 budget

The European Union will increase allocations for the Eastern Neighborhood, including Moldova, by 25 million euros in the EU budget for 2026. The European Parliament and the Council of the European Union have reached a final agreement in the negotiations on the EU Budget for 2026.

MEP Siegfried Mureșan emphasized that this increase is necessary to partially compensate for the United States' decision to withdraw support for civil society in the region.

“The agreement includes an amendment co-signed by me to the European Union Budget for 2026, in which we request an increase of 25 million euros for the Eastern Neighborhood, including Moldova. In the context of the American support withdrawal, we believe it is the EU’s duty to support independent NGOs, so they can continue their activity. Civil society plays an essential role in strengthening democracy in our neighboring states, especially in candidate countries like Moldova, which are facing anti-democratic pressures and aggressions from the Russian Federation,” stated Siegfried Mureșan.

The initiative to increase the budget belongs to the European Parliament. An amendment to this effect was voted on by the legislative plenary on 22 October 2025.
