Higher fines for carriers: Hungary imposes penalties of up to 1,000 euros for deviations from transit routes
International freight carriers will face tougher penalties in Hungary for failing to comply with transit routes, after the Hungarian authorities introduced new control and monitoring rules starting from April 2026.
According to the National Road Transport Agency (ANTA), the changes involve a significant increase in fines for leaving designated transit routes. The penalty has been raised from 100,000 forints (approximately 250 euros) to 400,000 forints (around 1,000 euros).
Hungarian authorities will carry out more rigorous inspections, in order to verify compliance with the rules by transport operators, within the monitoring system applied to vehicles in transit.
The official routes’ map, which includes border crossing points and mandatory routes, is also available on the UTINFORM platform, used for road informing.
ANTA representatives recommend that operators inform drivers in advance about the new rules, in order to avoid financial penalties and potential disruptions to transport operations on Hungarian territory.
