BTA: Heavy Truck Restrictions Introduced Across Bulgaria Amid Heatwave
Bulgaria will temporarily restrict the movement of trucks weighing over 20 tonnes (HVGs) Tuesday and Wednesday as temperatures are forecast to exceed 35°C, the Road Infrastructure Agency (RIA) said.
Heavy truck traffic will be suspended between Sofia and Yambol on the Trakia Motorway, as well as along the full length of the Struma and Maritsa motorways. Similar measures will apply on sections of the Hemus Motorway in the Sofia, Lovech and Targovishte regions.
Heavy vehicle restrictions will also be introduced on several major roads across Bulgaria, including routes in the regions of Vidin, Montana, Vratsa, Stara Zagora, Ruse, Silistra, Razgrad, Shumen, Veliko Tarnovo, Pleven, Lovech, Gabrovo and Targovishte, depending on local weather conditions.
The restrictions will be in force from 1:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. whenever air temperatures rise above 35°C. According to RIA, the measures are designed to reduce the risk of heat-related road surface damage and improve safety for all road users. The agency also urged motorists to drive with caution, obey traffic rules, avoid risky overtaking and refrain from using motorway emergency lanes to bypass congestion, as these must remain clear for emergency vehicles.
The restrictions do not apply to trucks carrying perishable food, temperature-controlled cargo, live animals or dangerous goods.
