Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu has taken part in the opening of the 2026 judicial year of the Constitutional Court (CC), marking 31 years of activity of this landmark institution for the rule of law of Moldova.

The PM highlighted the role of the Court in defending the Constitution of Moldova, noting that it stays a pillar in protecting citizens’ rights. At the same time, the prime minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to strengthening the rule of law and the independence of public institutions.

“The government has the responsibility to turn written rights into everyday realities for citizens. Thirty-one years after the creation of the Constitutional Court, Moldova remains a democracy in consolidation, but one that has clearly defined its European destiny even in the text of the Constitution. As long as the Constitution stays alive in the decisions of institutions and in people’s trust, Moldova will continue to move forward with dignity, clarity and courage,” Alexandru Munteanu said.

The prime minister stressed that, in the regional context marked by the war in Ukraine, constitutional institutions had an essential role in maintaining democratic order and protecting citizens’ fundamental rights.

“Fundamental rights gain meaning only when they are effectively protected. The war in Ukraine reminded us how fragile freedom and security can become when law is challenged by force. In such moments, constitutional institutions become the anchor that keeps society within the bounds of democracy and respect for human beings,” the PM noted.

The Constitution does not defend itself, and independent, responsible and credible institutions are fundamental for consolidating the rule of law and advancing the country’s European path.
