President issues warning about scams: Only thieves ask for money, passwords or promise quick gains by phone or online
President of the Republic of Moldova Maia Sandu has issued a public warning about the increasing number of phone and online scams, which have caused a growing number of citizens to lose significant amounts of money.
The head of state drew attention to the fact that scammers are using increasingly sophisticated methods to gain victims’ trust. “Thieves are well trained. They can seem convincing,” the president said. Maia Sandu mentioned that the perpetrators pose as relatives, bank employees, investors or police officers, and even use fake video materials created with the help of artificial intelligence. “Only thieves ask for money, passwords or promise quick gains by phone or online,” the head of state warned.
The president urged citizens to immediately end any conversation in which they are asked for money or banking details, not to share confidential information, and to verify the authenticity of calls using the official phone numbers of institutions. “Do not talk to strangers who ask you for money or your bank code. Hang up the phone,” the head of state said.
Maia Sandu also encouraged citizens to talk to the families and acquaintances about these risks and to share the message in order to prevent further cases of fraud.
