President of Cyprus in Chisinau says Presidency of Council of European Union standing with Moldova on Europe Day
President Maia Sandu welcomed her Cypriot counterpart, Nikos Christodoulides, to Chisinau today, on Europe Day. This is the first bilateral visit of a President of Cyprus to Moldova and comes shortly after the head of state’s trip to Nicosia. Cyprus will hold the rotating Presidency of the Council of the European Union in the first half of 2026.
“I am glad that your visit comes at an important time — Cyprus is exercising the Presidency of the Council of the European Union, and Moldova is determined to take firm steps on its European path during this period,” Maia Sandu said at the joint news conference.
The two heads of state discussed the enlargement of the European Union as a strategic response to regional threats, the next steps Moldova’s EU accession process and the deepening of the bilateral partnership.
The head of state reiterated that accession to the European Union is the most important national project since the attainment of independence. “For us, EU membership is also a survival strategy, in a context in which an aggressor continues to threaten our sovereignty. Moldova wants to be part of the peace project that is the European Union,” Maia Sandu underlined.
During the meeting, the Moldovan president reaffirmed her strong support for the independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of Cyprus, as well as for its reunification, in accordance with the relevant UN Security Council resolutions. “Cyprus knows what it means to have your sovereignty threatened — and it also knows what it means to be part of a strong family,” the head of state emphasized.
The celebration of Europe Day in Chisinau continued with a concert on the Great National Assembly Square, where the two heads of state addressed the public at 20:30.
