European Commissioner for Defence: EU to greatly benefit in terms of security with Moldova's accession
A larger and stronger European Union is a security element for the entire Europe. The EU will greatly benefit in terms of security once Moldova joins. European Commissioner for Defence Andrius Kubilius made the statements during a video speech at Moldova Security Forum, organized today in Chișinău. In his message, the European official emphasized that "we need you and you need us".
"The Republic of Moldova has shown its resilience in facing attacks and upholding democratic values. When history shows us, we will see that the Republic of Moldova is an inspirational example for the entire EU. Moldova is making excellent progress on its path to EU accession. There are many reforms that the Republic of Moldova needs to implement. As I have said before, the EU will greatly benefit once the Republic of Moldova becomes a member from a security perspective," stated the official.
Andrius Kubilius highlighted that our country's future is within the European Union. "A larger and stronger European Union is a security element for the entire Europe. We need you and you need us. The future of the Republic of Moldova is in the EU, the future of Ukraine is in the EU and let's make this happen as soon as possible," affirmed the European commissioner.
The official added that the Republic of Moldova benefits from extensive support from the European Defence Facility and assured that our country can continue to rely on EU support.
The European commissioner also emphasized the success of the Republic of Moldova against foreign interferences.
"Thank you, Republic of Moldova, for not failing when faced with Russian interference attempts to influence elections. Russia is much larger than the Republic of Moldova, but you managed to withstand the blackmail, and your institutions have shown an example of how we can effectively counter this brutal war against democracy. You managed to safeguard the hearts and minds of your citizens despite the targeted attacks on the Moldovan population, and indeed, you succeeded in defending the elections effectively. Your citizens chose a European future for the Republic of Moldova. You have passed this test and shown Europe a wonderful example. As President Maia Sandu previously stated, the Republic of Moldova is like a test ground, but Europe is the target," the European official opined.
In this context, Andrius Kubilius stated that Europe has a lot to learn from the experience of the Republic of Moldova. "Firstly, in this fight against cyber attacks, we need to understand that everyone must do their part to address all these concerns. What works has been shown by the Republic of Moldova, namely state institutions working together to counter all hybrid attacks. We need to have effective military forces to repel enemy invasions. As for cyber attacks, we need police forces and a justice system capable of facing all the challenges that undermine democracy," communicated Andrius Kubilius.
Today, in Chișinău, the second edition of the Moldova Security Forum is organized. The event brings together officials from the Republic of Moldova and partner states, representatives from NATO and the European Union, experts, members of civil society, and academia. During this event, participants will analyze emerging risks, identify current vulnerabilities, and formulate common solutions and strategic responses to strengthen national and regional resilience.
