European democracy shield provides new tools for protecting democratic institutions in EU
The European Democracy Shield, recently presented by the European Commission, is a long-awaited initiative that will bring new tools to protect democratic institutions throughout the European Union. Deputy Prime Minister for European Integration Cristina Gherasimov made the statement today. She provided details about Moldova's contribution to the EU's new initiative.
“What Moldova can contribute to this initiative is precisely the experience we bring from two electoral contests, in the fall of 2024, from the fall of this year, and from the referendum which also took place last fall, where we faced unprecedented interference from the Russian Federation and its proxies. This experience helped us develop a stronger regulatory framework, tools to counter hybrid attacks, cyberattacks on the state's critical infrastructure, and we are already making these best practices available to the member states today. This experience is what Moldova can bring and contribute to strengthen and protect democracies throughout the European Union,” declared Cristina Gherasimov.
The European Commission presented the European Democracy Shield in the middle of this week, which represents a set of concrete measures for empowering, protecting, and promoting strong and resilient democracies throughout the European Union.
Through the European Democracy Shield, the European Commission will intensify efforts to combat information manipulation and foreign interference. EU delegations and representations abroad will be strengthened, and partnerships will be mobilized to address external actions of information manipulation and disinformation.
