Moldova, Poland prepare new cooperation agreement in defence sector

Moldova and Poland will negotiate a new cooperation agreement in the defence sector. Members of the parliamentary commission for foreign policy today approved the consultative opinion on launching the negotiations.

The initiative comes from the Defence Ministry, and the authorities specify that the new document aims to update the present legal framework and to expand bilateral cooperation in areas considered strategic for security and military modernization.

According to the authors, the future agreement will strengthen the partnership, by facilitating assistance in the field of defense, developing joint programmes for the modernization of military equipment, as well as scientific research projects and the optimization of procurement processes in the defence sector.

At present, military cooperation between Moldova and Poland is based on an agreement signed in 1998. Officials note that the document is outdated and no longer reflects the new areas of collaboration, and the new agreement will replace it once it enters into force.

The new legal framework will expand cooperation in such areas as defence policy and strategic planning, democratic control over the armed forces, the defence industry, logistics, participation in international missions, training and military exercises, medical support, human resources management, information and communication technologies, cyber defence, protection against weapons of mass destruction and strategic communication.

Moldova currently has framework defence cooperation agreements with 23 states.
