Moldovan foreign affairs minister visits Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, condemns Russia’s attacks on Ukraine’s cultural heritage

Deputy Prime Minister, Foreign Affairs Minister Mihai Popsoi has visited the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, one of Ukraine’s most important spiritual and cultural monuments, included on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The minister condemned Russian Federation’s attacks on Ukrainian cultural heritage.

The visit took place in the context in which, in mid-June, the roof of the Dormition Cathedral, part of the monastic complex, was approximately 80 per cent destroyed following a fire caused by Russian shelling.

The Moldovan diplomacy head reiterated Moldova’s firm condemnation of the attacks launched by the Russian Federation against Ukraine, including those directed at civilian targets and cultural heritage.

“There can be no justification for the barbaric attacks by the Russian Federation, which have also caused significant destruction at the Pechersk Lavra complex. It is yet another proof that this unjustified war of the Kremlin seeks to destroy not only cities and human lives, but also the memory and identity of a people. Moldova reaffirms its full solidarity with Ukraine and supports the efforts to protect and restore the cultural heritage affected by Russian military aggression,” Mihai Popsoi said.

After the fire at the Dormition Cathedral, the Ukrainian authorities installed a temporary roof to protect the building until restoration work begins. For safety reasons, access for visitors and worshippers inside the cathedral stays restricted, while other areas of the complex are open to the public.

The Kyiv Pechersk Lavra has been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1990 and is one of the most important symbols of Ukraine’s religious and cultural heritage.
