Parliament speaker says Moldova needs stable government in Bucharest

Moldova needs a stable and pro-European government in Bucharest as soon as possible, one that will continue joint projects and support Chișinău’s European path. Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu has made statements to this effect, when asked by journalists what expectations he has from the formation of the new government in Romania.

This comes in the context of the political crisis in Romania, which has lasted for several weeks and has affected the pace of joint projects between the two states.

“I am expecting a government in Bucharest as soon as possible, because any uncertainty creates problems. Attention is diverted to other issues and not to our projects. We need a stable, pro-European Bucharest, with which we can move forward in our process of European integration and implement joint projects,” Igor Grosu said.

The speaker expressed confidence that pro-European political leaders in Romania would identify a solution for forming the new cabinet.

“I have full confidence that the president, Mr. Bolojan and the other pro-European parties will find a solution. Everyone understands that Romania needs a government. It has the PNRR (National Recovery and Resilience Plan); it has commitments to honor and many other important things,” Grosu noted.

Romania is going through a period of political instability, after the government led by Ilie Bolojan was dismissed through a motion of no confidence in early last  May. Subsequently, two attempts to form a new cabinet failed. The first nomination ended without an investiture vote, after the withdrawal of candidate Eugen Tomac, while the second cabinet, proposed by Adrian Vestea, did not get the necessary number of votes in parliament.

At present, consultations for the nomination of a new prime minister are ongoing. At party level, two candidacies have been put forward: the coalition formed by National Liberal Party (PNL), Save Romania Union (USR) and Democratic Union of Hungarians of Romania (UDMR) supports MEP Siegfried Muresan, while the Social Democratic Party (PSD) proposes the party’s interim leader, Sorin Grindeanu. The decision on the official nomination of the prime minister is to be taken by President of Romania Nicusor Dan, after the completion of consultations with parliamentary parties.
