Romania supports rapid opening of EU negotiation clusters for Moldova, Ukraine

Romania will support the rapid opening of all remaining negotiation clusters for Moldova and Ukraine in the process of joining the European Union. Romanian President Nicusor Dan today made statements in Chisinau, after the trilateral meeting with President Maia Sandu and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

“Romania will actively support the rapid opening of all outstanding negotiation clusters, both with Moldova and with Ukraine, based on the principle of merit-based accession,” Nicusor Dan said.

The three presidents also discussed cooperation in the field of regional security, in the context of the war in Ukraine. Nicusor Dan said that Romania and Moldova were “highly exposed” to the consequences of the war and that the two countries were working together to counter the risks and threats triggered by the conflict. The Romanian head of state reaffirmed support for Ukraine’s independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity, noting that Romania backs a “just and lasting” peace, as well as involvement in Ukraine’s reconstruction.

Another point of discussion was the joint projects among the three countries, especially in the field of energy interconnection and infrastructure. According to Nicusor Dan, cooperation in the “Odesa Triangle” format is relevant for regional security and for implementing projects with direct benefits for citizens.

The trilateral meeting in Chisinau took place in the context of marking 35 years of the Republic of Moldova’s independence. Romania, Moldova and Ukraine cooperate within the “Odesa Triangle” format, focused on joint projects and strengthening security in the Black Sea region and in Southeast Europe.
