Speaker attends PACE Standing Committee Meeting
The Republic of Moldova will approach the Chairmanship of the Council of Europe's Committee of Ministers with the utmost responsibility and, during this mandate will primarily attempt to facilitate support for Ukraine by the Council of Europe. Speaker Igor Grosu made the statement at the Standing Committee meeting of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, which is taking place today in Chisinau.
Igor Grosu said that it is symbolic that Moldova is taking over the Chairmanship of the Council of Europe's Committee of Ministers in the year of the 30th anniversary of its accession to the Council of Europe, at such an important time for our country's European path.
'Thirty years ago, when Moldova became a member of the Council of Europe, European values were thriving, and people were confident in a united Europe where peace reigns. Today, as we take over the Chairmanship of the Council of Europe’s Committee of Ministers, war has returned to the European continent, and the European values as we know them are in danger,' stated Igor Grosu.
The official added that when the war in Ukraine began, Moldova perhaps more than ever understood the risks of a fragile democracy, energy dependency, and institutions incapable of protecting their citizens. At the same time, according to him, Moldovans understood that only alongside the European states, free and truly democratic, can we safeguard our country.
'When the war in Ukraine began, Moldova, perhaps more than ever, understood the risks of a fragile democracy, energy dependency, and institutions incapable of protecting their citizens. Moldova understood the need to reform fundamentally, to become strong, so that it can no longer be blackmailed, threatened, or manipulated by a neighbor with imperialist ambitions.
Moldovans understood that only alongside free and truly democratic European states, can we safeguard our country. Therefore, today we speak about a Moldova that knows what it wants, that has firmly embarked on the path to EU accession and that does not look back,' he emphasized.
Under these conditions, the Republic of Moldova, in record time, managed to ensure its energy independence, strengthen its presence on the international stage, increase investment in education and healthcare, and bolster law institutions to be capable of preventing or punishing electoral corruption and the illegal financing of parties.
'All thanks to the resilience and intelligence of the Moldovans, thanks to the courage and bravery of the Ukrainians, and thanks to our European friends who did not leave us alone when we were in great need of help,' said Grosu.
The Speaker said that Chisinau authorities will approach the Chairmanship of the Council of Europe's Committee of Ministers with the utmost responsibility and will try to facilitate primarily the support provided to Ukraine by the Council of Europe during this mandate.
'We know what it means to build your democracy from scratch. We know what it means to live for years under manipulation, disinformation, and blackmail. We will not go back there. Therefore, we will approach the Chairmanship of the Council of Europe's Committee of Ministers with the utmost responsibility and will attempt in this mandate to primarily facilitate the support provided to Ukraine by the Council of Europe. We do not forget for a moment that Moldova and all of Europe are, at this very moment, being defended by Ukraine. I assure you that Moldova is an ally of free and democratic countries. Moldova is most interested in preserving and strengthening European values and the European Union. Because that is where our home is and where we are heading. Thank you for your presence, for the support you have given our country all these years. Moldova would not have succeeded without friends. And I wish us all the courage to continue working for what is most valuable to us - peace and freedom,' concluded Igor Grosu.
