Fathers of twins to receive extended leave and paternity allowance for each child

Fathers of twin children will benefit from extended leave and a paternal allowance for each child. The amendments were approved at today’s cabinet meeting.

The new regulations will apply to fathers of twins, triplets, quadruplets, or in cases of simultaneous adoption of multiple children.

Minister of Labor and Social Protection Natalia Plugaru stated that this measure continues previous efforts to support families with young children and provides fathers, especially those with twins or multiple children from one birth, the opportunity to benefit from paternal leave as well as allowances for each child.

“In recent years, through the measures introduced by the Government, we have almost doubled the number of fathers taking paternal leave and all these measures are aimed at supporting a balance between work and family life, helping families with young children by actively involving fathers in nurturing and caring for their children from the first months of life,” added Natalia Plugaru.

Thus, until July 1, 2025, fathers with twin children or adopted sibling children received only one paternal allowance, but after the approval of these amendments, they will receive a paternal allowance for 15 days for each child. Similarly, the period of paternal leave can be divided into three parts of 5 days each throughout the year.

According to statistics, in 2025, this paternal leave will benefit 30 individuals with twin children and 2 individuals with triplets.

The resources needed to provide these allowances will be covered from the state social insurance budget. According to data presented by CNAS, for the first six months of 2025, approximately 274.4 thousand lei are required, for 2026 – 608.0 thousand lei, and for 2027 – 669.9 thousand lei.
