The Republic of Moldova today launches a new phase of the National Program for Forest Expansion and Rehabilitation – #ForestGeneration, one of the most extensive environmental initiatives in the country's history.

Autumn 2025 reforestation campaign is officially launched on Saturday, November 15, in the village of Mihailovca, Cimișlia district, where 27 hectares of new forest will be planted. In parallel, planting activities will take place in all the country's districts, offering every citizen the opportunity to participate.

Campaign start at Sărătenii Vechi: the place where 'forests are born'

Preparations for this year's campaign began at Sărătenii Vechi forestry nursery, Telenești district, where the Ministry of Environment and Moldsilva Agency presented the seedling production process, the technologies used, and the stages that precede the actual planting.

'This is where future forests are born,' said the Minister of Environment, Gheorghe Hajder, emphasizing that the national program launched at the initiative of President Maia Sandu has an ambitious goal: 145,000 hectares of forest planted and rehabilitated by 2032.

In the last two years, Moldova has already planted over 16,000 hectares, and by the end of 2025, the figure will reach 20,000 hectares.

Moldova – the least forested country in Europe

The minister highlighted the urgency of reforestation efforts in a period marked by drought, storms, and increasingly frequent extreme phenomena:

'The Republic of Moldova has just over 11% forested area – the lowest rate in Europe. Every tree planted is a symbol of responsibility to nature and the future of Moldova,' estimated Gheorghe Hajder.

To accelerate the pace, the country benefits from a 200 million euro financing agreement signed with the European Investment Bank, funds that will allow the planting of over 63,000 hectares in the next four years; the construction of 10 wood depots; the development of a modern semilogical center; the creation of three nurseries with new technologies; the rehabilitation of 265 km of forest roads.

So far, all works have been funded from the national budget.

33 million seedlings, ready for the campaign

Moldsilva Agency announced the technical details of the campaign, taking place from November 15 to December 15. It involves 33 million seedlings ready for planting; 840 ha of afforestation in the existing forest fund; 2,600 ha of new forests on land provided by local authorities; an annual goal: over 7,000 ha planted. The Agency encouraged schools, institutions, and volunteers to participate, highlighting the ideal conditions during this rainy autumn, favorable for planting.

Prepared lands and field inspections

In Cimișlia district, Ministry of Environment teams inspected the lands, confirming that the soil is properly prepared for planting. Favorable weather conditions offer a promising start.

'We have locations in every district so that everyone can plant close to home,' declared Hajder during the visit to Mihailovca.

National mobilization: ministers, deputies, mayors, students, NGOs

Autumn 2025 campaign promises to be one of the most extensive so far. In addition to the Ministry of Environment and 'Moldsilva,' citizens, town halls, schools and public institutions, private companies, civil society organizations, Parliament, and Government are invited to participate.

Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu urged fellow citizens to participate alongside the Executive.

'On Saturday, the Government goes to plant. Find the nearest location because we are the generation of the forest,' urged the head of the Cabinet of Ministers.

In the Parliament, the call was reiterated by the former Minister of Environment, now PAS Deputy, Sergiu Lazarencu, who invited deputies to a planting action in Alexeevca, Ungheni.

The opposition has requested stricter rules for choosing seedlings, and the President of Parliament, Igor Grosu, confirmed the legislature's willingness to support the improvement of norms, including through the upcoming Forestry Code.

How the public can get involved

Participants can quickly register online through the dedicated section of the action, 'Participate in Planting – Autumn 2025,' available on both the Ministry of Environment website and 'Moldsilva' Agency website. Here citizens will find the complete list of locations in each district, the contact details of coordinators, practical recommendations for planting.

Logistics, seedlings, and soil preparation are provided by 'Moldsilva.'

Long-term objectives: a greener, more resilient, and healthier Moldova

Autumn 2025 campaign consolidates efforts made in recent years to recover ecological imbalances. Reforestation contributes to reducing the effects of climate change; increasing the quality of air and water; stabilizing soils and preventing erosion; creating ecological corridors; developing local communities.

Minister of Environment Gheorghe Hajder summarized the meaning of the campaign: 'ForestGeneration is not just a campaign – it is a national movement for our green future.'

A legacy for future generations

The national program aims to increase the forested area by at least 100,000 – 145,000 hectares by 2030–2032, a historical transformation that can fundamentally change Moldova's ecological balance.

So far, local public authorities have identified over 28,000 hectares for reforestation, demonstrating active collaboration with the Government.

November 15 is the day a new forest begins for Moldova. In Mihailovca, Cimișlia, and all the country's districts, on November 15 a new stage begins. A stage where every citizen can contribute to change because a tree planted today means a safer, greener, and healthier future for Moldova.
