Public consultations for new Law on Public Access to Environmental Information and Justice: EcoContact actively involved in drafting

EcoContact participated in today's public consultations organized by the Ministry of Environment on the draft of the new Law regarding public access to information, justice, and participation in environmental decision-making. The event brought together representatives of civil society, public institutions, media, experts, and citizens interested in strengthening the legislative framework in the environmental protection.

During the discussions, participants formulated proposals and observations on improving the text of the law, aiming to ensure an efficient and coherent application of the principles of transparency and public participation in environmental decision-making processes.

“Our legal team provided technical and advisory support to the Ministry of Environment in the drafting and adjustment process of the document. The current project represents an expanded version of a former Regulation, transformed into law at the recommendation of the Ministry of Justice, to allow the full transposition of European Union directives and the provisions of the Aarhus Convention on access to information, public participation, and access to justice in environmental matters,” explains EcoContact.

The main goal of the project is to enhance administrative transparency, optimize public consultations, and strengthen guarantees for the exercise of environmental rights.

The new law proposes a unified framework for three essential mechanisms - public access to environmental information, citizen participation in the decision-making process, and challenging decisions with environmental impact.

The drafting of the law benefits from economic and legal expertise provided by EcoContact specialists under the project “Green Justice for a Protected Environment and Sustainable Communities in the Republic of Moldova,” implemented with the support of the Swedish Government.

“Through this involvement, we reaffirm our active role in promoting good environmental governance, contributing to the formation of a legislative framework aligned with European standards of transparency, participation, and public responsibility,” concludes EcoContact.
