VIDEO // Environment Ministry advocates for modern waste management centers instead of unauthorized dumpsites
The Ministry of Environment is promoting the construction of modern waste management centers and the closure of unauthorized dumpsites, against the backdrop of growing problems related to soil and water pollution. In a public message, the ministry warns that the waste problem cannot be solved without specialized infrastructure and calls for community support for its development.
“We cannot have electricity without power plants, substations and power lines. We cannot have good roads without construction sites. We cannot have tap water without aqueducts and pumping stations,” argued Grigore Stratulat, State Secretary of the Ministry of Environment.
According to him, the same logic must be applied to waste. In order to eliminate unauthorized dumpsites, specialized centers are needed where waste can be collected and managed safely.
The environmental authority specifies that the waste management centers will not be simple dumps, but modern facilities equipped with systems for gas capture, leachate treatment and protective membranes that prevent soil contamination.
The authorities state that these technologies are necessary to reduce the impact of waste on the environment and to prevent the pollution of water and land.
“We will not be able to get rid of unauthorized dumpsites without building these waste management centers,” Stratulat emphasizes.
The institution compares the waste management issue to treating an illness, arguing that eliminating illegal dumpsites requires accepting infrastructural solutions that allow for controlled waste management.
“If we want the problem to disappear and, at the same time, refuse the very infrastructure that is being built to solve it,” this is the ministry’s message.
The construction of waste management centers is part of the authorities’ efforts to modernize the national waste management system and to reduce the number of unauthorized landfills, which are among the sources of environmental pollution.
