The Environment Ministry and the Moldsilva Forestry Agency officially launched this year's autumn reforestation campaign today. The event took place outdoors at the forest nursery in Saratenii Vechi, central Telenesti district, where participants could see how the seedlings are prepared for planting, discuss with specialists and learn details about the stages of the reforestation process.
The central launch event will take place in the Mihailovca village, southern Cimislia district, on November 15, where 27 hectares of new forest will be planted. At the same time, reforestation actions will be organized in each district, giving all citizens the opportunity to contribute to expanding the forest fund of Moldova.
‘’Our presence here at the nursery is no coincidence. Future forests are born here. Through this national programme, initiated by President Maia Sandu, we aim to plant and rehabilitate 145,000 hectares of forest, a surface equivalent to the entire city of Chisinau and its suburbs, taken twice. In the last two years, we have planted over 16,000 hectares, and by the end of this year, we will reach 20,000 hectares. Each tree planted is a symbol of responsibility towards nature and the future of Moldova,’’ said Gheorghe Hajder, Environment Minister.
The official emphasized the urgency of these actions, in the context of Moldova having the lowest reforestation rate in Europe, at just over 11 per cent of the country's area. This vulnerability exacerbates the negative effects of climate change and extreme weather phenomena.
National efforts will be supported by a financing agreement worth 200 million euros, signed with the European Investment Bank. The funds, which will be used starting next year, will allow for planting over 63,000 hectares of forest in the next four years, constructing 10 wood depots, a modern semiological center, three nurseries equipped with new technologies and rehabilitating over 265 km of forest roads. Until now, all reforestation work, including in this autumn's campaign, has been funded exclusively from the national budget.
Director-General of the Moldsilva' Agency Victor Durbala provided technical details about the autumn campaign, which will be conducted during November 15-December 15.
‘’We are in the third year of the national program and are enjoying a rainy autumn, favorable for planting. We aim to maintain the pace of planting over 7,000 hectares annually. For this autumn, we have prepared over 33 million seedlings and plan to reforest 840 hectares in the existing forest fund and over 2,600 hectares of new forests on land provided by local public authorities. We invite all volunteers, schools and institutions to join us. Only together can we make Moldova greener and healthier,’’ said the head of the Moldsilva Agency.
Citizens interested in participating in the planting actions are encouraged to consult the official website of the Moldsilva Agency, where a section dedicated to the campaign is available. There, they will find a list of all planting locations in each district and the contact details of responsible coordinators, allowing them to register and organize efficiently. The agency will provide the seedlings, prepare the land and supply the necessary logistics for all volunteers.
The Autumn 2025 reforestation campaign is part of the National Programme for Forest Expansion and Rehabilitation #ForestGeneration, initiated by President Maia Sandu, through which 145,000 hectares will be planted in Moldova by 2032.
In the first two years since launch the National Programme for Forest Expansion and Rehabilitation, more than 15,000 hectares of forest have been planted, with an investment of over 300 million lei. A significant step in extending this effort is the historic financing agreement signed in 2024 between the Ministry of Environment and the European Investment Bank, valued at 200 million euros. This funding will enable the planting of an additional 63,000 hectares of forest and the development of necessary infrastructure, in order to ensure the long-term sustainability of this ambitious program.
This year's campaign will consolidate the progress achieved in previous years and continue Moldova's strategic objective of having a sustainable, ecologically and economically balanced forest fund, contributing simultaneously to achieving national and international climate and sustainable development targets.
