Moldovan women recognized internationally for role in security and equality

European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos congratulated the women of the Republic of Moldova for the historic performance of the country in the Global Gender Equality Index, where, for the first time, Moldova ranked 7th in 2025.

The statements were made today during the international conference Women4Security 2025, held in Chișinău, an event dedicated to promoting the role of women in security, peace, and governance. Commissioner Kos emphasized that women's involvement in strengthening the safety, freedom, and well-being of citizens contributes directly to enhancing the resilience of the Republic of Moldova.

“Active participation of women in all areas of society is essential for a strong community and a secure country,” declared Marta Kos.

The Women4Security 2025 conference brings together leaders, experts, and decision-makers with the aim of implementing commitments made through United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325, which promotes women's involvement in decision-making processes regarding peace and security.

The event is organized by the Ministry of Internal Affairs in partnership with UN Women Moldova, the European Union Partnership Mission in the Republic of Moldova (EUPM Moldova), the Geneva Centre for the Democratic Control of Armed Forces (DCAF), and GS Foundation, with financial support from Sweden and Denmark.

Women in the Republic of Moldova play an essential role in society, actively contributing to the country's economic, social, and political development. They participate in decision-making processes in administration, lead businesses and farms, promote education and culture, and support initiatives for security and the protection of human rights.

The country's recent progress in gender equality reflects the consistent involvement of women: in 2025, the Republic of Moldova ranked 7th in the Global Gender Equality Index, marking international recognition of the efforts of the government, civil society, and local leaders.

The government and international partners support women through mentorship programs, funding, and professional training to ensure equal participation and sustainable community development. Their active role remains a pillar of a resilient, equitable, and prosperous society.
