Chisinau, 4 February /MOLDPRES/ - The Prosecutor General’s Office, in concert with the Intelligence and Security Service and Special Telecommunications Centre State Enterprise, have identified and blocked a virus aiming at the information systems of five Moldovan public institutions.

Data by the Prosecutor General’s Office shows the information from the infected computers was not compromised, as the virus was discovered at an incipient stage, and thus any attempt of the evil software to set its components on the computers, as well as to manage the orders from the attackers’ server was ceased.

Following the analysis made by IT specialists, six control servers were identified, all of them located abroad. There also was evidence proving that the malware used advanced encryption techniques. Most often, the infection with this virus took place via e-mails looking identically with the official correspondence messages. The encrypted information remained in the victim’s computer and, in order to decrypt it, a reward was requested, depending on the number of encrypted files, as well as the type of their extension.

At present, experts clear up the case and inform the authorities and governmental institutions about the risks from the on-line environment and recommend that the information security practices be observed.
