Chisinau, 25 October /MOLDPRES/ - The 28 employees of the National Patrolling Inspectorate (INP), detained by anticorruption prosecutors today, are suspected of taking bribes worth from 100 lei to $1,000. The head of the Anticorruption Prosecutor’s Office, Viorel Morari, has made statements to this effect at a news conference.

Morari noted that the money had been offered for non-compilation of reports and other alleged contraventions that were to be documented in the road traffic. “The corruption actions took place this year. The ground for opening criminal files represented appeals by drivers, heads of transport companies, as well as findings of monitoring carried out by the Interior Ministry, which ascertains that INP is a subdivision with the highest risk of committing corruption deeds. At the same time, there are audio and video recordings proving this fact,” Viorel Morari said.

According to the Anticorruption Prosecutor, the contraventions that were to be documented relate to driving vehicles under the influence of alcohol, moving at the red signal of the traffic lights, exceeding the speed, etc. All employees detained today were placed under arrest for 72 hours. Presently, actions are undertaken to identify and detain another five persons for the same charges,” Morari specified.

If found guilty, the suspects run the risk of being sentenced to 10 years of imprisonment, with imposing a fine worth up to 8,000 conventional units (160,000 lei) and deprivation of the right to hold certain positions for up to ten years.
