Chisinau, 27 January /MOLDPRES/- Former President of Romania Traian Basescu has sued head of state Igor Dodon for withdrawing Moldovan citizenship.

The head of Secretariat of the Supreme Court of Justice, Valentin Lastavetchi, confirmed the information on the matter. “The application was submitted on 26 January at the court. Subsequently, examination date will be announced at least three days before”, the quoted source reads.

At the same time, Basescu’s lawyer Andrei Bivol noted that the application had been submitted as “citizenship of Basescu was withdrawn arbitrarily, and the decision is contrary to the principles and procedures seen in the citizenship law and European Convention on Citizenship. The application on law suit is distributed within 24 hours to the panel, then during five days a procedural decision should be issued according to the legislation in Moldova”, Bivol said.

President Igor Dodon signed in early January a decree on withdrawing Moldovan citizenship to Traian Basescu. The head of state said “Mr. Basescu got citizenship illegally, as a number of notices from more institutions have been ignored in the procedure, regarding criminal investigation on Basescu, but he has hidden this essential fact, which is the reason for depriving citizenship under the legal norm”.
