Moldovan deputy foreign minister attends UN Security Council High-level open debate on conflicts in Europe

Chisinau, 22 February /MOLDPRES/- On 21 February 2017, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration Lilian Darii attended the UN Security Council High-level open debate on the maintenance of international peace and security focusing on conflicts in Europe. The meeting was convened at the initiative of Ukraine, President of the UN Security Council in February 2017, and aimed at examining threats to international and regional peace and security in the light of protracted and ongoing conflicts in Europe.

The meeting was chaired by the Ukrainian Foreign Minister Pavlo Klimkin. The debate were attended by the UN Secretary General Antonio Gutteres, high level representatives of the OSCE, EU, GUAM, as well as a number of ministers and deputy ministers, particularly from European countries affected by conflicts, who highlighted visions, approaches and ways for conflict settlement processes with the assistance and involvement of the UN and of other relevant regional organizations.

In his address, Deputy Foreign Minister Lilian Darii drew attention to the human, economic and social costs of “frozen” and ongoing conflicts in the ex-Soviet states and their negative effects on regional peace and stability. In this context, he elaborated on the vision and the efforts of the Moldovan authorities towards the settlement of the Transnistrian conflict and sustainable solutions for various problems deriving form this unresolved conflict.

The Moldovan official called for a better interaction between the UN and regional organizations in order to create preconditions for the resolution of protracted conflicts, emphasizing the need for stronger action from the UN, particularly from the Security Council, to ensure respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity of the states affected by conflicts.
