National Bank of Moldova puts into circulation new commemorative coin

The National Bank of Moldova /BNM/ releases today into numismatic circulation a commemorative coin titled, 100 Years Since the First Installation of the Roman She-Wolf Statue in Chisinau, which completes the series, Monuments of Moldova. The coin is released on the International Day for Monuments and Sites, also known as Heritage Day.

The coin is minted in silver, has a nominal value of 50 lei and a mintage of 300 units.

According to the BNM, the coin is dedicated to celebrating the centenary of the first installation of the Roman She-Wolf statue in Chisinau, a symbol of the historical and cultural connection between Moldova and the Roman tradition.

The Roman She-Wolf statue was inaugurated during the General Exhibition and Sample Fair held in 1925. The marble pedestal was made according to the project of architect Eugen Bernardazzi, son of Alexandru Bernardazzi - a renowned architect from Chisinau.  For the first time, the statue was set in front of the Palace of the Council, later - the seat of the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences, the current National Museum of History of Moldova. The Roman She-Wolf monument with Romulus and Remus is included in the Register of Monuments of Moldova, protected by the state.

The author of the design of the commemorative coin, 100 Years Since the First Installation of the Roman She-Wolf Statue in Chisinau is Valeria Cărăușu.

The commemorative coins are sold to wide public both by the National Bank of Moldova, based on online requests submitted on the BNM's website under the 'Coin' section, and through licensed banks of Moldova. Licensed banks have right to independently set the selling price of jubilee and commemorative coins, which will not exceed by three percent the price set by the National Bank of Moldova.
