The railway infrastructure in the south of Moldova is undergoing an extensive modernization process aimed at ensuring interconnection with European transport networks. During a working visit to the region, Deputy Prime Minister, Infrastructure and Regional Development Minister Vladimir Bolea has inspected the progress of works on the strategic sections Cantemir–Falciu and Valeni–Cahul, where interventions entered decisive phases for the resumption of railway traffic.
Integration into the European network on the Cantemir–Falciu section
At the Prut-2 station, rehabilitation works are close to completion. So far, specialists have fully restored approximately 4 kilometers of mixed-gauge railway. A key aspect of this project is the installation of the European-gauge track, an important stage for aligning Moldova’s Railways with the technical standards of the European Union.
Recent technical tests have confirmed the functionality and optimal condition of the new infrastructure, thus paving the way for the safe resumption of train traffic on this section, which connects to Romania.
Large-scale consolidation works on the Valeni–Cahul section
Significant progress has also been reported on the Valeni–Cahul section, where the complexity of the works is driven by the need to protect the railway against natural disasters and erosion of the Prut River bank.
During the site visit, the official checked the status of the strengthening works, where the figures show a massive deployment of resources:
Deep drilling: 920 boreholes have been executed, some reaching depths of up to 25 meters.
Concrete consolidation: About 8,000 tons of concrete have been poured to form supporting piles that stabilize the riverbank and slope.
Long-term protection: These structural reinforcements are meant to prevent landslides and ensure the long-term durability of the railway in the face of extreme weather events.
Outlook and final stages
The next phase of the project in the Valeni area will include the completion of slope stabilization, followed by the installation of the railway superstructure. In discussions with workers, Deputy Prime Minister Vladimir Bolea emphasized the strategic importance of these investments for the national economy and for citizens’ mobility.
The modernization of these railway sections will not only facilitate the transport of goods and passengers to the West, but will also strengthen Moldova’s position as an important logistics hub on the eastern border of the European Union.
