Vine, wine legislation of Moldova to be aligned with European standards

The lawmakers today adopted, in the second reading, the draft law regulating the alignment of the national vine and wine legislation with the European Union’s requirements.

The new legislation aims to improve transparency and traceability of vine and wine production, while guaranteeing, at the same time, the quality and authenticity of the marketed products. Also, the draft seeks to stimulate free market competition.

Among the important amendments, there are the regulation of terms used in the vine-growing and winemaking sector, the introduction of the obligation to keep registry records and the annual submission of vine and wine declarations.

Thus, the Law of Vine and Wine has been completed also with regulations on the traditional mentions of vine and wine products, including the definition of such terms as “protected geographical indication” and “protected designation of origin.”

The draft also regulates the conditions for producing these wines and the registration of economic agents in the Vine and Wine Registry.

An important aspect of the new legislation is the regulation of labeling and packaging of vine and wine products. Labels and packaging in stock before the new law comes into force can be used till December 31, 2025.
