Water treatment plant to be built in Edinet city of Moldova, with EU support

A project for the construction of a water treatment plant has launched in the northern Edinet city, which will provide drinking water for the residents of Edinet and Cupcini. The project is carried out within the European programme,  EU4Moldova: Local Communities.

The European Union will provide 5.85 million euros under the EU4Moldova: Local Communities programme, for the construction of the Water Treatment Plant (WTP) in Edinet. The water treatment plant in Edinet will supply drinking water to about 25,800 residents of the Edinet city and the city of Cupcini.

“Access to clean water is a fundamental right. Caring for people and the observance of all fundamental rights are essential preconditions for joining the European Union. And Moldova, as I have earlier said, is not alone in this journey. The 5.8 million euros which we have allocated for the construction of the water treatment plant is, in fact, an investment in the well-being of 25,800 people,” said  Jānis Mažeiks, European Union's Ambassador to Moldova.

The investments include the construction of a new water treatment plant (production capacity of 5,184 m³/day), located on the site of pumping station no. 4, along with a new energy supply system and the reconstruction of high and low voltage electrical installations (10 kV line), as well as the rehabilitation of one of the two reservoirs.

Also, at the Racovat / Badragii-Vechi reservoir, a new intake structure and raw water pumping station, with a capacity of 90 l/s, and a 1 km pipeline for connection to the existing adduction pipe will be constructed. As part of the project, the electromechanical components (pumps, electrical systems) at three intermediate pumping stations will be modernized, in order to ensure efficient and reliable operation.

Ambassador of Austria to Moldova Stella Avallone said that Austria was a committed partner in strengthening Moldova's water infrastructure.

“Through this investment in Edinet and additional efforts in Cupcini and Bratuseni, we are proud to support the communities in developing safe, durable and resilient water supply systems, which meet both people's needs and environmental protection requirements,” the ambassador stated.

Infrastructure investments will provide access to clean water, which stays a significant challenge in the Edinet district. The partial exclusion of components from the old system will contribute to improving the overall efficiency of the water supply network and opens the way for future investments aimed at reducing water losses.

“This project shows the government's strategic priority to modernize public water supply and sewerage services in Moldova and to make sure that the citizens throughout the country have access to safe drinking water. We are grateful to our international partners for the implementation of this much expected project,” said Corneliu Cirimpei, State Secretary at the Ministry of Infrastructure and Regional Development.

The project is financed by the European Union, Austrian Development Cooperation (ADC), the government of Moldova and is implemented by the Austrian Development Agency (ADA).
