Government expands list of scholarship recipients for athletes
5 November 2025, Chișinău - Starting 1 January 2026, more students and young people achieving European and world-level performances will receive a monthly financial allowance. The government has decided to expand the Scholarship Program for athletes.
So far, scholarships were only awarded to athletes in the senior, junior (18-20 years old), and cadet (16-17 years old) categories. Following the Executive's decision, scholarships will also be available to students aged 13 to 15 and young people aged 21 to 23.
“It is important to support young athletes, the future generations of Olympic champions," Minister of Education and Research Dan Perciun said.
The amount of scholarships will depend on the level of competition and the results achieved by each athlete. Thus, the monthly allowance for a gold medal at the Olympic Games will be up to five average salaries in the economy (about 80,000 lei), and for student performance at the European Championships, the minimum monthly scholarship value will be a quarter of the average salary in the economy (about 4,000 lei).
In 2024, Moldovan athletes achieved a record number of 731 medals at Olympic, Paralympic and non-Olympic competitions, showing remarkable performances across all age categories. Additionally, several athletes successfully represented the country at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, winning one silver medal and five bronze medals.
