Moldovan government approves establishment of Ungheni–Ungheni border crossing point
The new road border crossing point, Ungheni–Ungheni, opened to international traffic, will be officially included in the Agreement between Moldova and Romania on state border crossing points. The government has approved the Protocol amending the Agreement.
The crossing point will be part of the infrastructure connected to the road bridge over the Prut River and will contribute to the direct connection of Moldova to the European roads’ network. The establishment of the Ungheni–Ungheni point will allow the redistribution of traffic flows and the reduction of pressure on existing crossing points, in particular Leuseni–Albita and Sculeni–Sculeni. Thus, waiting times at the border will be shortened and the mobility of citizens and the transport of goods will be facilitated.
In addition, the new crossing point will support the development of economic exchanges between Moldova and Romania, will reduce logistics costs for economic agents and will contribute to enhanced regional connectivity.
The new point will become operational upon completion of the cross-border bridge over the Prut and will ensure a direct link to Romania’s highways’ network, including the future A8 Highway, as well as to the European TEN-T transport network.
The investment, which includes the bridge over the Prut and the joint border crossing point, is financed from non-reimbursable European funds through the Connecting Europe Facility, with a total value exceeding 30 million euros.
