
Dorin Recean ends work as Moldova's PM, not to run for another term
Dorin Recean will conclude his work service as prime minister with the expiration of the current government's mandate. The official made statements to this effect at a news conference today. The PM said that he had been honored by the trust of the Action and Solidarity Party (PAS) to give him the responsibility of leading the government for the next period. Yet, he emphasized that his decision to withdraw from this position was personal and assumed.
The official thanked the entire team for their good cooperation during this difficult period for the country.
"We have fulfilled our duty together with President Maia Sandu, with the PAS MPs and members, alongside whom we have started essential projects for our country, and today we are incredibly close to our strategic objective of becoming a member of the European Union. I thank PAS for their trust and for the mandate to lead the government of Moldova on this complicated period. I have worked with professional, dedicated, worthy and courageous people," emphasized Dorin Recean.
The prime minister pointed out that, ten years ago, PAS, led by Maia Sandu, "embarked on a fight for real democracy and independence of Moldova."
"With many obstacles and mistakes, with dilemmas and immense challenges, PAS has maintained its worthy commitment and today we talk about a Moldova that has rid itself of oligarchs, is cleaning up the justice system, strengthening state institutions, working to become a member of the European Union, and implementing solutions to grow the economy. I thank the state institutions, which under very difficult conditions and under time pressure, have learned quickly and chose to protect the country's interests in the most challenging moments for Moldova. Even if many of your efforts have remained invisible, the stage the country is at today is due to each public servant, each policeman, officer, prosecutor, and judge, each state employee who chose to do their duty honestly and with dedication. You have proven that we can build a strong and truly independent state," said the prime minister.
Dorin Recean noted that the decision to end his term as PM was a personal one.
"There are many discussions in society, and we have the duty to bring clarity and predictability in this regard. I was honored by the trust of PAS and the party's intention to give the responsibility of the prime minister's mandate for the upcoming political cycle, but my personal decision is different. Two and a half years ago, I was solicited for a very clear task - to fulfill a mandate ensuring security and constitutional order. I did not intend to be or remain in politics, so my mandate ends with the expiration of the current government's term. At the same time, our country is moving to another stage of development. During the current cabinet’s term, we have managed to do together what was necessary for Moldova to be among the strong states of the world. Now, it is necessary for the next governance mandate to be about economic growth and development," said Dorin Recean.
Also, the prime minister informed that he would resign from his mandate of lawmaker too.
"I came from the private sector for a very clear mandate in a time when there were many dangers for Moldova in terms of security, of the fact that we are close to a war and with many challenges regarding the justice reform and ensuring the integrity of the vote. It was a call from PAS and President Maia Sandu to ensure these two and a half years, which were necessary for Moldova to strengthen its institutions. Now we have a new parliament, a new pro-European majority of PAS, and it is necessary to move to another stage. I will not continue to be in public life or political life. I will resign from the parliamentary mandate immediately after voting for a new government. After this, I will continue the professional path I set aside a few years ago. However, I will never hesitate to help the team. Thank you very much for your trust," Dorin Recean emphasized.
In the context of the decision announced by Prime Minister Dorin Recean, PAS president Igor Grosu said that the party already had a candidate for the prime minister position; yet, the name will be made public after official consultations with President Maia Sandu.
