Moldovan prosecutors ask for retrial of MP Marina Tauber's case, increased sentence

The Anti-Corruption Prosecution Office (PA) has filed an appeal with the Centru Court of Appeal against the sentence pronounced by the Chisinau Court on September 30, 2025, in the case of former MP Marina Tauber and the Shor Political Party. Prosecutors are asking for a harsher penalty.

According to the cited source, prosecutors believe that the court's decision is unfounded regarding the cessation of the criminal process for interference with the administration of justice and that the penalty imposed for the other four charges is too lenient.

The cited source claims the court's decision to cease the criminal proceedings for interference with the administration of justice, motivated by the presence of only one contravention, is unfounded. The act meets all the constitutive elements of a crime. All relevant evidence, including video and audio recordings, were presented to the court of first instance, and the argument that "insufficient evidence has been gathered" is unjustified.

Prosecutors also specify that the imposed sentence—seven years and six months in prison for four charges concerning falsification of financial reports and acceptance of illegal financing from an organized criminal group—is not proportional to the gravity of the acts, does not ensure the effective correction of the defendant and does not discourage others from committing similar crimes.

In the context, the PA asked the Centru Court of Appeal to partially cancel the sentence and retry the case with Marina Tauber's conviction for the crime of interference with the administration of justice, imposing a 13-year prison sentence.
